This was the Dosher Canning Plant just west of the Whittier’s Bench on Bay Street, probably taken in the 1920s. Shrimp were the principal product, although vegetables also were canned in season. The tall structure in the center background was the old Cape Fear pilot tower and the white building on the left was the original "Ship’s Chandler", now occupied by the waterfront restaurant by that name. This photo is from the Herring family album. Cape Fear fishing By Jim Harper Staff Writer Hoards of big Spanish mackerel, some weighing up to eight pounds, invaded Oak Island piers Monday and Tuesday, eclipsing a run of whopping cobia bidding to take over the king mackerel spotlight on the pier ends. "Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds" of Spanish were taken at Long Beach Pier the two days, said Dave Bcckner. All on plugs, he reported, "and exceptional for size." At Ocean Crest, Carl Collins said his anglers caught many big Spanish on both days, using metal plugs. The favorite color, said Collins, was chartreuse. At the same time live-baiters were landing some lunker cobia on the pier ends. Bcckner issued citations to Ralph Pew surf fish are more thrilling to catch than a big blue, as Al Hale found Saturday morning on Bald Head Island. He beached this nine pounder in Bald Head Slough. BETTY LOIS JERNIGAN EXECUTRIX OF THE ESTATE OF LOUIS ELTON JERNIGAN 4507 E. Yacht Drive Long Beach, NC 28465 (4-2249;5-6,13) Summers for a 56-pounder, Ray Woodside for a 44-pounder and William Fleming for a 45-pounder on Tuesday. At Ocean Crest, Collins said three of the five cobia taken there Tues day were keepers - over 33 inches from nose to the fork of the tail. Collins said he had a hard time persuading his anglers that they had to throw back "shorts" weighing from ten to 15 pounds, but he con vinced them that was the law. (Collins said that a legal, 33-inch, cobia would weigh in the 22-to-24 pound range.) At Sure Catch Tackle in South port, Steve Smith said there were some good reports of Spanish mack erel taken by trailers in the vicinity of the piers - Ocean Crest west to Lockwood Folly, and said Leonard Boera and Hoyle Dosher had good luck with big Spanish on Jaybird Shoal. Smith said inside fishermen also were catching nice spots and whit ing, and smaller trolling boats were doing well with kings on Lighthouse Rock. Jimmy Price at Wildlife Bait and Tackle said speckled trout were hit ting around Battery Island and the rocks at the CP&L canal, and that four-pound blues were tearing up trolled trout grubs around Striking Island on Monday. On Tuesday, Gregory Gamer reported flounder, blues and whiting on Jaybird Shoal while fishing with squid strips. In the Bald Head Island surf on Saturday, A1 Hale landed a nine pound bluefish, and whiting and flounder were hitting in Bald Head Slough. Offshore reports indicate that small school kings are still in the Frying Pan tower area, along with large blues. ENJOY MORE AFFORDABLE INSURANCE Save with Nationwide’s Home & Car Discount! Mike Helms had two big yel lowfin tuna, two large wahoo and a dolphin for a party. Next day Capt. Robbie Helms reported an excellent blue-water trip in the same area, catching a 40 pound yellowfin, 25-pound bigeye, 15-pound blackfin, 30-pound wahoo, ten-pound dolphin and several nice barracuda. Good Spanish mackerel fishing should continue from Frying Pan Shoals to the Lockwood Folly bar over the weekend, and blues should be hitting on Jaybird and Frying Pan shoals. Trailers should try Clark spoons, and might do better with lures trolled behind weights or small planers. On the piers, Spanish and kings, as well as cobia, will be the big attrac tions, and in the rivers speckled trout and flounder will be prime targets. Lures are still in order for both specks and flounder, but live bait is likely to show up for cast-netters soon. It is surprising to learn the degree to which Bermuda has played a promi nent role in the history of the United States. There are three occasions of special significance. The first was in the early 1600s when a ship bound from England to bring new settlers and supplies to the colony at Manteo was wrecked on the rocky shores of that island. No lives were lost and the survivors sal vaged the timbers and riggings from their ship. They set about the business of building a replacement, and came up with not one vessel but two, with material from the modest cedar forest on the island adding supplies to the project. Once they were completed a year and a half later they resumed the delayed voyage and all arrived safely at Manteo. The second chapter occurred during the War of 1812. The British used Bermuda as a staging area for an invasion of the East Coast of the United States and the natives, at that time loyal British subjects, joined the army. The strike actually was made and Washington, D. C., appeared to be the target. As a result the White House was burned and other major damage was done. There is a marker on the island commemorating the invasion of the United States. A third connection resulted from activities during the Civil War. The Confederacy badly needed arms and ammunition and England needed cot ton, so an accommodation was worked out. British ships delivered the weapons of war to Bermuda and the blockade runners transported bales of cotton to that port where cargos were exchanged. Most of these military supplies were consigned to the port of Wilmington and arrived at the mouth of the Cape Fear River for perilous entry through one of the two harbor channels, the one off Fort Caswell and the other under the protec tive guns of Fori Fisher. Wilmington became the last port of supply, and when Fort Fisher fell the end was in sight for the Confederate army. Their neighbors in the United States long since have forgiven the Bermudians for their hostile participation in the War of 1812 and our neighbors to the north hold no malice for the role they played in helping to sustain the South. Residents of that island are friendly, hospitable people who have refined the tourist business to a high level of comfort and con venience. For us, it is more than a dot on the map showing a small island in the Atlantic Ocean 700 miles off the coast of the United States. It is a vaca tion spot which each of us hope to have an opportunity to visit sometime.
